This was my
twenty-second trip on
an undergraduate university field
course at a Field Studies
Council's centre (since 2003), and the sixth to Blencathra in the Lake District. As
usual the course investigated diverse groups as part of various
field methods in ecology. My trip report focuses on birds seen and
heard across the site
and the surrounding area.
The centre has a small patch of mixed woodland which is surrounded
by sheep-grazed meadows and a bracken-covered hillside with Meadow
Pipit and Skylark, and Wheatear, with Raven and Ring Ouzel on the higher hill
ground. Slightly further afield, there are some nice patches of Sessile
Oak woodland with Redstart, Pied Flycatcher and Tree Pipit. The upland streams have
Dipper, Grey Wagtail, Goosander and Common Sandpiper. Scarce or
less frequently encountered species seen or heard during 2019-2026
trips have included Mute Swan, Red Kite, Osprey, Quail, Red Grouse,
Curlew, Little Owl, Green Woodpecker, Kingfisher, Grasshopper Warbler
& Crossbill.
