THE DIARY

Day 1
Thursday 16 August 2007
Lima [Aeropuerto > Museo Historia Natural > Costa Verde] >Tarapoto, San Martín

AEROPUERTO JORGE CHAVEZ, CALLAO, LIMA > MUSEO HISTORIA NATURAL, LINCE, LIMA
On arriving in Lima, I had intended flying straight to Tarapoto on the tropical east slope of the Andes but some business came up which meant a trip to the Lima Natural History Museum (worth a visit - stuffed White-winged Guan there!) to sort out some permits (thanks to Sandra and Lydia there). Around the airport were the first of the ubiquitous Pacific Doves. As the crazy taxi drive joined the formula one race circuit into the city, American Black Vultures flapped somewhere between the fog and the smog. Yesterday was apparently sunny, but today was a typical grey day in the austral winter. Species noted in the grounds of the museum and on the walk to Miraflores: Amazilia Hummingbird, Croaking Ground Dove, Vermillion Flycatcher, Bananaquit, Shiny Cowbird, Long-tailed Mockingbird, American Black Vulture, Eared Dove, Feral Pigeon, Blue-gray Tanager, Blue-and-white Swallow, Groove-billed Ani, Rufous-collared Sparrow, Tropical Kingbird, and Southern Beardless-Tyrannulet.

COSTA VERDE, MIRAFLORES LIMA
With an evening flight to Tarapoto, I had several hours to spare so made a trip to the coast at Miraflores to observe some seabirds. Good numbers of Gray Gulls coming into breeding plumage and some close enough for photography (see here). Many Peruvian Boobies, Band-tailed Gulls, Kelp Gulls feeding and passing offshore along with several Peruvian Pelicans. Also Blackish Oystercatcher (2), Neotropic Cormorant (150+), and American Kestrel (2).

AEROPUERTO JORGE CHAVEZ, CALLAO, LIMA > TARAPOTO, SAN MARTÍN
Took the 2120h LAN flight to Tarapoto. Soon speeding to Jaewoo Chung's 'field station' on a mototaxi (three-wheeled rickshaw-like transport) in the balmy evening air.
